Hayzee emerges winner of season 13 of MTV Base Cypher
The 13th season of Nigeria's top hip-hop competition show, MTV Base Cypher, has come to a close and mentor Reminisce has crowned a winner: Hayzee. Sponsored by candy brand TomTom, Hayzee won a N1 million cash prize after fending off stiff competition from 31 other rappers across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.
The season finale was one for the books as the final eight contestants - Flexbizzle, Hayzee, Kingrexxie, Fozter, Baron Jay, Emortal, Apex, DiyoMatalo and Spydermanne showed off their lyrical prowess with record-breaking deliveries. After a performance worthy of applause, Fozter emerged 2nd runner-up while Baron Jay took the well-deserved position of 1st runner-up.
Cadbury (Gum and Candy) West Africa Category Manager, MorolakeEmokpaire, acknowledged that "the quality of performances we have seen from the competitors and the public's reception to the unique challenges executed throughout of the season highlight the essence of our “Breathe for it”, which aims to inspire, focus and clarify the pursuit of excellence through their various touchpoints. Similarly with the MTV Base Cypher, we will continue to seek innovative ways to connect with diverse expressions of individual talent.
When asked "Why Hayzee?" mentor, Reminisce said, “Hayzee's lyrics, technical ability and everything else was a consistent 80, 85, 90. He was top of the standings at every level. It was truly a well-deserved victory."
“I want to say a big thank you to MTV Base and TomTom for this great opportunity to not only learn, but also show my talents to the world,” Hayzee commented on his competition experience. “I also acknowledge the efforts of Reminisce, Tobi shang, DJ Embassy, Rooboy and everyone who made my efforts shine. To all the finalists, congratulations to us, we are all winners,” he said.
