Mr. Udenkwo escaped from Okwu Forest in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state on Monday where he was taken by the kidnappers, according to a Sun newspaper report.

Mr. Udenkwo, who recounted his ordeal, said he escaped when he noticed some of the kidnappers looking dazed.

The kidnappers had contacted the monarch's family about 48 hours after his abduction and demanded a ransom of 200 million naira.

They would later reduce the amount to N12 million before the monarch fled.

"I was tied at the leg and at the hand, but I begged that they have mercy on me and, at least, untie my hands, they obliged me and untied my hands “, Mr. Udenkwo said.

He said his adductors agreed to his request as they were "looking forward" to the 12 million naira ransom his family had agreed to pay them.

"While waiting for the money to be sent, one of the kidnappers fell asleep, while the other went to smoke Indian hemp.

"When I noticed that the two men were nowhere around me, I carefully untied myself, crawled quietly, and left the scene. I managed to run as fast as possible in the forest through the bush, while they were looking for me without knowing the route I had taken,” he said.

The traditional ruler said he arrived later in a residential area around 10 p.m. where he was helped to join his family members to inform them that he had escaped the kidnappers.

He said the police were also contacted, who came looking for him in the residential area.

State Police spokesman Michael Abattam confirmed the monarch's escape.

"We had to act quickly when we heard the distress call where he was and rescued him unharmed," Mr. Abattam said.
