HYPPADEC youth transformation program adapted to reduce insecurity

Hydropower Generation Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) said its youth transformation training program is capable of reducing widespread insecurity among people in its target states.

States targeted by HYPPADEC are Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Benue and Niger states, while some local government areas of the commission's activities include Patigi, Kaiama, Moro, Baruten, Edu local government areas and Ilorin East.

Speaking at a two-day training-of-trainers (ToT) program of the commission of 30 master trainers in Ilorin on Friday, HYPPADEC's Community and Rural Development Unit Manager, Mr. Mahmoud Umar Mohammed, identified poverty and high unemployment as a major cause of precariousness and social vices among young people in the region.

Represented by the head of the community development unit, Dr Ibrahim Babangida Ibrahim, the director said that the commission's youth transformation training program will reduce insecurity, empower young people and also develop the region.

He said the commission is well equipped to make young people productive, adding that futuristic young people are now supplementing their college degrees with professional skills to improve their socio-economic existence and relevance.

The HYPPADEC Director also urged master trainers to provide quality training to young people through capacity sharing to make them competent and capable master trainers on their own.

Also speaking, HYPPADEC Coordinator for Kwara State, Hajia Hajara Ndaman Alhassan said that a total of 97 master trainers have been programmed to train 604 youths in five selected local government areas of the state.

Hajia Alhassan said the youths would undergo training in 36 skills, such as computer application, fish farming, carpentry, hairdressing and hairdressing, among other vocational skills to improve their individual well-being and develop their region.

She said the youth training program is anchored on three strands of behavior change, financial literacy and skills building, adding that it aims to empower young people and not be a nuisance to society.

The programme, which was attended by NDE's Director of Special Public Works, Ms. Roseline Olaomi, NDE's Kwara State Coordinator, Mr. Aba Omachoko, among other dignitaries, saw the Commissioner of the Youth Development Committee, Hajia Jamilah Bake, asking the commission to include the other 11 local government areas in the state in its program.
