Hyundai launches all-electric SUV in India

South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor India Ltd on Wednesday launched its IONIQ 5 full-battery electric SUV for the Indian market at Auto Expo 2023.

The premium electric SUV, which is already sold in many countries, will be offered at a special price for the first 500 buyers at ₹44.95,000.

It will be Hyundai's second electric car after Kona in the country, according to The Hindu businessline.

Speaking at the event, Hyundai Motor India Chief Operating Officer Tarun Garg said reservations for the electric car, which comes with an ARAI-certified range of 631km, had already started on December 21, 2022, and that the company received 200 reservations before the launch.

IONIQ is the first model developed on Hyundai's new E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform). It comes with super-fast charging capability from 10-80% in just 18 minutes (with 350kW DC charger) and 21 minutes (with 150kW DC charger).

It is powered by a 72.6 kWh battery. IONIQ 5 has been designed to produce a power of 160 kW (217 hp) and a torque of 350 Nm (35.7 kgm).

The electric SUV offers 400V and 800V multi-charging to reduce waiting times at charging stations; 800V super-fast and 400V fast chargers can be used for charging.

It features "state-of-the-art Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology" which will allow customers to power electrical devices such as laptops, phones and other devices.

The V2L port is located under the second row seats. Another V2L port is located on the charging port outside the vehicle. Using an inverter, customers can power electric equipment such as bicycles, e-scooters, and camping gear, among others
