Government of Katsina mobilize 2,400 young people to fight against insecurity

The Katsina State Government has reached agreements to hire approximately 2,400 young people to help provide security in some local governments affected by insecurity.

In a statement signed by the state governor's senior special assistant for the media, Malam Miqdad, on Saturday, the government said it had already started planning how to carry out youth recruitment in eight governments premises.

The local governments are Kankara, Faskari, Sabuwa, Dandume, Batsari, Safana, Danmusa and Jibia. He said 300 young people will be recruited from eight of the local governments.

"On Friday, July 7, 2023, the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Faruk Lawal-Jobe, initiated the distribution of forms to LG Chairpersons whose LGAs are struggling with insecurity.

"The forms will then be distributed to able-bodied young people who are willing and ready to participate in protecting the lives and property of members of their community."

He said development was one of the governor's main campaign promises, adding that young people would be trained by security personnel.

Katsina, like most states in the North West region of Nigeria, is grappling with severe insecurity.

Efforts by the government and security agencies have failed to stop the situation and the approach of recruiting young people to provide security is similar to what was done in Borno State, where a youth vigilante group called Civilian JTF was instrumental in reversing the threat posed by the Islamist group Boko Haram.
