Most of us would prefer to arrive at our destination alongside our traveling companion, but David Crossley, 74, from East Yorkshire, is so passionate about railways that he sometimes abandons his wife to take the slower route.

Even if it costs him more money. 

He explains: 'I much prefer train travel to flying, even though it takes longer and costs more.

'There's less hassle and stress than going through an airport, plus you have the luxury of enjoying the surroundings at a slower pace and more relaxed.'
