Dramatic footage of a thrill seeker venturing within meters of a volcanic eruption in Iceland emerged despite warnings that it is spewing "potentially deadly poisonous gas pollution".

The volcano, which is located on Mount Fagradalsfjall, has started erupting on Monday following increased seismic activity in the area.

Lava meandered down the side of the mountain which is just 20 miles from the country's main airport at Keflavik.

< p class="mol-para-with-font">Residents of the nearby Reykjanes peninsula have been confined to their homes this week and encouraged to sleep with windows closed and ventilation turned off due to the risk of deadly toxic gas.

But warnings from police and weather forecasters didn't stop some from closing in on the action.
