Three Premier League talking points this weekend

Arsenal went one step closer to proving their Premier League titles with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Liverpool, but the Gunners were unable to get rid of Manchester City, who scored for free.

Erling Haaland scored his 20th goal of the season in just 12 games as City beat Southampton 4-0 to stay one point behind the leaders.

Winnings for Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United made a miserable weekend worse for Liverpool, who now have a mountain to climb just to get back into the top four.

Here are three talking points from the Premier League weekend.

Troubled Liverpool 'lose confidence'

— Virgil van Dijk has admitted the Reds are suffering from a crisis of confidence after defeat at the Emirates left them 14 points behind the leaders.

Jurgen Klopp's side have won just two of their first eight league games in their worst start in 10 years.

Just months after narrowly missing out on an unprecedented four-fold, Liverpool languish in the mid-table having already lost as many games as they did last season.

A grating defense was a major factor in their dismal run, with Trent Alexander-Arnold once again on display and the usually imperious Van Dijk below his best against Arsenal.

Liverpool have conceded six goals in their last two league games and also suffered a chaotic 4-1 defeat at Napoli in the Champions League in September.

"Trust is definitely a thing, which plays a role, we are human beings," Van Dijk said.

"Sometimes you need confidence at certain times, and if your confidence is not high, it can't help you."

"If you don't win consistently like we need to, then trust crumbles, but we know it can change too."

Tottenham win tribute to Ventrone

— Harry Kane scored the only goal as third-placed Tottenham needed a 1-0 victory at Brighton at the end of a difficult week for Antonio Conte and his players.

On Thursday, Conte's longtime fitness trainer Gian Piero Ventrone died at the age of 61.

Kane pointed his black armband and the sky after scoring at the Amex, while Conte was visibly emotional during a minute's silence before kick-off.

"In just 10 months, I think Gian Piero has crossed everyone's heart," said Conte.

"They appreciated because we are talking about a very hard worker and for me, in his work, he is a scientist."

Kane was also on the verge of tears during his post-match interview.

"We are truly devastated by the pain of what happened," said the England captain. "No one expected this situation."

Newcastle celebrates Saudi anniversary

— A year after the controversial takeover of Newcastle by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, the Magpies are targeting the top four.

Eddie Howe's men beat Brentford 5-1 at St. James' Park to move into sixth place, just two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Despite the deep pockets of their new owners, Newcastle have been more reserved in the transfer market than many expected 12 months ago.

But their biggest investment so far is starting to pay off as Bruno Guimaraes scored twice against the Bees.
