The Rivers State government has said no blackmail will deter it from suing the lawmaker representing Port Harcourt Federal Constituency II, the Hon. Chinyere Igwe, whose gas station was sealed off for illegal oil bunkering activities.

Rivers State Governor's Chief of Staff, Emeka Woke, revealed this during a permanent voter card awareness and mobilization rally organized by a pro-PDP group, the Grassroots Development Initiative in Mogho, Gokana Local Government Area of the State.

Woke insisted that the state government has a constitutional obligation to deal decisively with anyone involved in acts harmful to the Nigerian economy.

Woke said so in a statement released by his media office and made available to reporters on Monday.

He said, "Anyone who allows their business premises to be used for illegal oil bunkering, those premises will be shut down.

“Anyone who allows their hotel to house criminals bent on destabilizing the state, we will treat you according to the law.”

While urging the federal legislator to submit to security agencies for questioning, Woke warned him to refrain from misleading the unsuspecting public with false claims that he was politically persecuted.

He further criticized Igwe for making disparaging remarks about the state's Governor, Nyesom Wike, saying that without the Governor's benevolence, the federal legislator would have experienced political extinction.

"I listen to Chinyere Igwe yesterday talking about ingratitude. A man who had been politically retired. He is the man who only served one term in the House of Representatives and returned home.

"Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi chased him out of Port Harcourt and he ran to Abuja.

"He even contested on the ACN platform back then, and lost miserably. When we mobilized the GDI and strengthened the party (People's Democratic Party), we brought him back and those of them he said he was talking about at the moment.

"None of them were founding members of the GDI. And His Excellency, the governor gave him a platform, first as a commissioner, then in the National Assembly, even if he didn't win the primary. And today he speaks of ingratitude," he said.

Woke also urged state media organizations to be objective and uphold the ethics of journalism and not be used as purveyors of fake news.

The Chief of Staff commended the people of Gokana who turned out en masse for the GDI rally, for their unwavering commitment and support for the Wike administration.

Woke said Governor Wike's decision to double the Saakpenwa-Kono road by more than 31 kilometers is pure proof of his love and appreciation to the Ogoni people for their support over the years.

PDP Gubernatorial Candidate in Rivers State Siminalaye Fubara has urged people to jealously guard their PVCs ahead of the 2023 general election.

Similarly, the Chairman of the PDP in the state, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, commended the GDI for educating the people of the state on the importance of PVC.
