'In the presence of greatness' - Redknapp compares 'exceptional' England star to Gerrard and Lampard

Jamie Redknapp has praised England youngster Jude Bellingham, comparing him to big three Lions Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

At just 19, Bellingham has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe. Indeed, his form for Borussia Dortmund of late has highlighted the star power he possesses.

In 22 games in all competitions for the club this season, he has scored nine goals and provided three assists. His consistent performances helped him get into Gareth Southgate's starting XI for the World Cup.

Ex-England midfielder Redknapp believes the youngster can emulate the careers of some English big names.

"I remember when Stevie [Gerrard] first came into the Liverpool team at 17 and you realize you're in the presence of greatness because they move the ball differently. I think Jude is a bit like that,” he told Sky Sports (via Football Daily).

"They look alike. They're just great midfield and generational players to be honest. Stevie, Frank Lampard; he's a bit of everything Jude. That's what I like about him. He is very controlled. He's just an outstanding young man."

Bellingham's performances at such a young age show that he could follow in the footsteps of these players. The fact that he has already started playing for England reinforces this.

Indeed, the Dortmund midfielder hadn't scored for the Three Lions before his World Cup debut.

However, in the form he is currently in, it didn't take him long to change that. The 19-year-old scored England's opener against Iran in the 35th minute and continued to feature prominently throughout the game.

Bellingham's performance was all-around, earning him an 8.4 from WhoScored - which, for a 19-year-old's World Cup debut, is not to be despised.

It's already been a sensational season for the midfielder, and a good World Cup could push his stock up even further.

Gerrard and Lampard have consistently been two of the best midfielders in world football for years. As such, Bellingham need to maintain this type of form for some time to replicate the impact they have had on the game.

However, on the face of it, it looks like he has the kind of quality required to remain one of the best in his position for years to come. Putting on a great performance on the biggest stage of all can't hurt.
