Incoming first lady undergoes orientation as handover activities begin at Ekiti

The handover exercise to inaugurate the new Governor of Ekiti State has begun, as the new First Lady, Olayemi Oyebanji, underwent an orientation on her new roles on Thursday.

Her husband, Biodun Oyebanji, won the gubernatorial election on June 18 and would be sworn in on October 16.

Governor Kayode Fayemi last July appointed a 46-member committee to coordinate activities marking the end of his term as well as the inauguration ceremonies of Mr. Oyebanji's new administration.

The governor's wife chairs the committee while the governor-elect's wife serves as co-chair.

Mr. Oyebanji is a former state government secretary before running for governor.

He beat Segun Oni of the Social Democratic Party and Bisi Kolawole of the People's Democratic Party to become governor-elect.

Giving a brief note on the exercise, the outgoing First Lady of Ekiti, Bisi Fayemi, said on her Twitter account, @bisiafayemi, on Thursday that she had an onboarding session and handover of documents to Mrs. Oyebanji.

The session, she said, was designed to familiarize the new First Lady with how the state works and her roles as the governor's wife.

“My team and I had an onboarding session and handover of documents for the new First Lady, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji and her team,” she said.

"I also formally presented her with a copy of Learning on the Job, a Nigeria Governors' Wives Forum (NiGWF) handbook for state first ladies. I wish her a very successful tenure."

Ms. Fayemi will be remembered for her advocacy, particularly her efforts to address child sexual abuse in the state and the revision of laws introducing harsher penalties for sex offenders.
