INEC postpones announcement of election results in Cross River

INEC has postponed the announcement of election results in Cross River State until 10 a.m. Monday.

This was revealed by Gabriel Yomere, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Cross River on Sunday evening at the State Collection Center in Calabar.

According to him, the postponement was due to the fact that they received the result from Etung LGA alone, out of the 18 LGAs in the state.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the postponement was the second time on Sunday due to lack of results from all 18 LGAs in the state.

The event that was originally scheduled for 12 p.m. has been postponed to 7 p.m. because no results had been received at that time.

In an interview with reporters at the state snack in Calabar, Mr. Yomere said they were supposed to start the snack at 7 p.m. but around 9 p.m. only the Etung LGA result was available for announcement.

“We all know that the elections continued until Sunday in some LGAs in the state and in many of them, especially in the northern part of Cross River, the collation was still in progress at the level neighborhoods.

"Also, we all know that from Cross River North to Calabar takes about six to seven hours; by the time they finish snacking at the halls there, it would be around midnight and they can't get to Calabar until 7 a.m. or 8 a.m. on February 27.

"Just taking a result and waiting all night isn't cost effective, so the state readback officer and I decided to reschedule the announcement until 10 a.m. on the 27th February,” he said.

NAN also reports that the INEC secretariat in Calabar, the venue for gathering and announcing the results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Cross River, was heavily guarded by armed military and paramilitary officials. (NAN)
