INEC to review collation, recruiting returning officers – Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission has sought input from classification and returning officers in its determination to review the recruitment, training and assignment of these officers in future elections.

INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has also said that the results management system will be reviewed, following complaints from some Nigerians about the system being rolled out in the 2023 general election.

Speaking at the post-election review meeting with collators and returning officers in Abuja on Friday, the president said the commission will assess its strengths and weaknesses in order to improve the results management system.

Yakubu said: “Problems have arisen and some Nigerians have raised concerns about results management at different levels. Although some of the issues are in dispute and therefore subject to judgment, we can nevertheless discuss them extensively and, above all, share our experience on the way forward.

"The committee therefore expects that at this meeting we will identify strengths and weaknesses as well as the necessary reforms that we need to introduce in the future.

"Specifically, and based on your practical experience during the 2023 general election, we would like your perspective on the processes and procedures for recruiting, training and assigning ranking and returning officers."

He said the commission is also reviewing the logistics of travel to and from their duty stations, the integrity of the collection and reporting process, including the application of law, regulations and guidelines for earnings management.

He also cited for consideration the role of technology in results management, the security of collations/returning officers and collation centers, the conduct of party agents and election observers during collation, and the conduct of security personnel. »
