El-Rufai's wife offers cash gifts to rape victims

The wife of Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, Hadiza El-Rufai, made a cash donation to some survivors of gender-based violence in the state.

The governor's wife, who is also the chair of the Northern Governors Wives Forum, said the battle against GBV must be fought and won.

Speaking at the reception for victims at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim government headquarters on Tuesday, Ms El-Rufai noted that one of the best ways to tackle the scourge of GBV was through education and empowerment women's finance.

According to her, when women are educated and empowered, they will be financially independent from their abusers, hence the resolution of the Governors Wives Forum to donate part of the financial assistance to survivors.

So she presented a gift of N100,000 each to the survivors, among whom was young Safiya with Down syndrome, who was individually raped and pregnant by a relative of her stepfather.

She said: "The problem of gender-based violence is enormous, therefore the battle against it should not be taken lightly, it is a battle that must be fought and won. So we must oppose it firmly.

"Gender-based violence is a global problem, it's worse here because of certain cultural beliefs, but we will continue to do our best. We will continue to fight for women's rights.

"We do this because we know that when women have some sort of financial independence, it helps because some women even go back to their abusers because there is nothing they can do.

“That is why we must educate our women and give those who cannot, the means to earn a living.”
