Insecurity: National Assembly cannot impeach Buhari - presidency brags

The presidency has bragged that the National Assembly cannot impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.

The presidency has bragged that the ruling political party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has a majority of lawmakers in the Red Chamber, thus preventing the minority from having what they want.

DAILY POST reported that senators from all parties on Wednesday stormed out of the plenum, calling for the impeachment of Buhari, as well as Senate President Dr. Ahmad Lawan, over the rising rate of insecurity in Nigeria.

But Femi Adesina, the president's special adviser on media and publicity, has played down the chances of his director's impeachment.

Speaking on Channels Television in reaction to the decision, which is still in its early stages, Adesina said: "The National Assembly has a self-regulatory mechanism. It is so composed that minorities cannot not get what they want.

"They cannot impose it on a majority and fortunately, in these Chambers, we have sensible people who will say 'No, it is true that there is insecurity in the country and the President is doing its best, so let us continue to encourage security agencies to do better.'

"Mr. President is not going to wave a magic wand to solve security issues. No one has such a magic wand. It is something that would be done methodically.

"It's something that's going to be done systematically... It's not going to be done with a wave of a magic wand. There's no magic wand to solve this kind of problem."
