Block Inc SQ CEO Jack Dorsey says he's working to give $1 million a year to the Tor project.

What happened: The Twitter co-founder made the announcement on Twitter Thursday.

Tor is the short form of The Onion Router, which is run by the non-profit organization called The Tor Project and monitors internet censorship around the world.

Current funders of the project include the U.S. Office of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) through Georgetown University .

Why it matters: The former CEO of Twitter presented various projects related to open source technologies. Recently, he wrote a newsletter in which he pushed for a "free and open" protocol for social networks.

The message also pointed out its own shortcomings on Twitter and expressed its displeasure with the platform in its current avatar.

Dorsey recently said he plans to open a new grant category with the aim of awarding cash and equity grants to engineering teams working on social media, communication protocols, Bitcoin BTC/USD and a web-only mobile operating system.
