A joint virtual memorial service will be held for a couple of publishers

A joint virtual memorial service will be held on September 29 for two longtime members of the edition of New York scene, Lorna Koski and Kathleen Berger.

Koski, a former WWD associate editor, died May 20 at their Barrow Street apartment. The 69-year-old died of pulmonary thromboembolism due to deep vein thrombosis caused by relative immobility following surgery for a fractured right ankle after a fall. Koski was known for her encyclopedic knowledge, esoteric style, and acerbic wit. A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University (Radcliffe College) in 1974, Koski earned a master's degree from Cambridge University before moving into publishing where she interviewed titans such as Harold Bloom and Karl Lagerfeld. Born in Lihue on the island of Kauai in Hawaii, Koski grew up in a family that spent time in Ecuador before settling in Pendleton, Oregon.

Berger died on January 11 at the age of 77 from complications of a lung transplant and COVID-19, according to his brother. Due to this medical battle, Berger retired from publication a few years ago. She was a long-time editor of Newsweek, Time/Life books and Inc. magazine. Her brother also works in publishing as the author of "A More Beautiful Question: The Power of Inquiry to Spark Breakthrough Ideas" and other books. He said his sister would like to be remembered as someone "who was a good friend to people, a lover of cats, a good family member and someone who loved New York, as well as arts and Greenwich Village".

She and Koski got along wonderfully, as they each had a great sense of humor, quirky personalities and they were true New Yorkers through and through. They also loved Greenwich Village and Fire Island, and shared some of the same passions and interests.

Along with some West Coast-based members of Koski's family, Berger said the organization of an on-site gathering would have been difficult for full participation. The one-hour Zoom memorial will begin at 8 p.m. with a eulogy from Warren Berger, who will talk about Koski and his sister. The event will also be open to other people.

Berger said he and Koski planned to pay tribute to his sister. After Koski passed away, he decided to make a joint memorial instead. Next week's event could feature opera music, as the married couple enjoyed opera.

Ahead of the virtual memorial, Berger asked anyone interested to share a memory or memory of Berger or Koski, contact them beforehand for planning purposes.
