JUST IN: Gunmen kill four vigilantes in Anambra

Gunmen attacked and killed four members of Anambra Vigilance Services and also set fire to five buildings.

The incident was determined to have occurred in Ihiala Local Government Area in Anambra State at 2am on Thursday.

A source in the area said that after attacking and killing the self-defense officers of the local government secretariat, the gunmen beheaded one of them.

He said the gunmen also used improvised explosive devices to set fire to about five buildings in the area.

An unconfirmed source also added that one of the affected buildings housed the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The reason for the attack could not be determined, but state police spokesman DSP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident.

Ikenga said police officers were alerted and when they arrived at the scene, one of the gunmen was killed by police officers when confronted.

He confirmed that by the time police officers responded to the call, the gunmen had murdered three vigilante officers on duty and set fire to five buildings with improvised explosive devices and Molotov cocktails.

He said police and military operations were currently underway in the area.

He said: "Following ongoing police/military operations in Ihiala and nearby town, officers responded to a distress call at approximately 2:55 a.m. today 12/1/2023 of an attack against Ihiala Local Government Headquarters.

"Police neutralized one of the assailants, recovered two locally made IED snacks, seven unidentified IEDs, forty live rounds, fifteen live 7.62MM Ak47 ammunition, knives, fobs and other dangerous weapons.

“The assailants had already murdered three vigilante officers on duty, decapitated one, and set fire to five buildings with improvised explosive devices and Molotov cocktails.

"Members of the joint force attacked the arsonists/attackers and prevented them from causing further damage, while some escaped with gunshot wounds.

"The bodies of the victims have been recovered and joint operations are still ongoing. Further developments will be communicated, please."
