10-megawatt Kano hydroelectric plant completed and begins testing

The Kano State government has announced the completion of its 10 megawatt hydropower plant at the Tiga Dam.

Kano Hydro and Energy Development Company (KHEDCO) Managing Director Hadiza Tukur told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday.

Ms. Tukur said that the power plant will serve the state water treatment plant in Tamburawa and street lights in the metropolis, among others.

She said the power plant is awaiting certification from the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA).

"In the power plant, we have two generators, one vertical which will generate 8 megawatts of power and the other horizontal which will generate 2 megawatts of power, or 10 megawatts. That's why it's called Tiga, 10 megawatt power station.

"Everything is nearing completion, pre-commissioning testing is underway, only certification from the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) remains.

“Another thing waiting is also automation when it is completed we will turn on the water and allow it to run the turbine, we have obtained permission from the Basin Development Authority the Hadejia Jama'are River.

"The eight megawatts are tested with no load, but in the next two weeks we will be testing them with a load. The same goes for the two megawatts.

"The transmission line is fully completed from the Tiga power station to the Tamburawa water plant. We are generating at 33kv and also transmitting at 33kv, but when reaching the sewage treatment plant, we have a 33-11 step-down transformer.

"In the control panel, there are two selections, one for hydroelectricity and the other for Kano electricity distribution company KEDCO, this is in case we decide to stop the plan hydroelectric for maintenance.

"From Tamburawa Substation, another line will come out and be connected to the 2.5 MVA Transformer Substation which is connected to the street line in Kano Metropolis.

“God willing, in the next four weeks, the ten megawatts of electricity from Tiga will be transmitted to the water body of Tamburawa and the street lights of Kano, with this, a lot of loads will be reduced from from the government, and there will be no more paying the utility bill at the water treatment plant and buying generators or buying diesel for the generator running the street lights,” Ms. Tukur said.
