Kidnappers demand N50m ransom for Ondo traditional ruler and three others

The kidnappers of a traditional leader in Ikare-Akoko, North East Akoko Local Government Area, Ondo State demanded a ransom of 50 million naira to secure the release of the high chief and three other prisoners.

The four men, including the traditional chief, Mukaila Bello, Adeniran Adeyemo, Mr. Bashiru Adekile and Chief Gbafinro, were abducted on Thursday by gun-toting thugs as they traveled to Ikare-Akoko from Akure, the state capital.

The thugs who stopped their vehicle shot the driver of the vehicle in the head and were in hospital receiving treatment while the four men were taken into the forest.

A family source told Tribune Online that the kidnappers had an open discussion about securing the freedom of the four men with their families on Friday night.

He explained that the kidnappers left no room for negotiation below 50 million naira, saying the kidnappers argued that only 50 million naira would secure release of the four men.

The family member, however, said the family were not keen on paying the 50 million naira ransom but said the kidnappers had no left room for negotiation.

He said: "The kidnappers have contacted the families of the victims and are asking for the sum of 50 million naira to free them. They left no room for negotiation and we look forward to hearing from them again.

“We used fasting and prayer to seek the face of God on the four men. The kidnapping of the four has left the town in disarray and the only thing we can do is pray because we cannot pay the ransom.

However, the State Police Command said its men were not relying on its oars to ensure the release of abducted victims unharmed.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Funmilayo Odunlami, said detectives from the command were combing the forest in the area to secure the release of the living victims.

She said: "Police recovered the vehicle while the driver was taken to hospital. The driver is currently in stable condition.

"Police, local hunters and area vigilantes comb the bush to rescue victims and arrest attackers."

Talking about how the men were abducted, she explained that "police received a distress call on Thursday that at around 6:30 p.m. towards Ago Yeye, along Owo/Ikare road, gunmen shot a moving Toyota Corolla with registration number KAK 818 AE.

"The gunmen fired into the vehicle and the bullet hit the driver in the head and the vehicle came to a stop, while the other occupants, numbering approximately four, were taken into the bush while the driver was abandoned."
