However, reports that the La Liga club have re-established themselves as favorites quickly gathered pace over the weekend.
Several reports from Sunday were positive reading for Barca fans as they appear to be closing in on signing Koundé ahead of their English counterparts.
A Sport report claims the 23-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with the Catalan club, who "will have to convince" Sevilla to accept an offer.
However, a journalist from the same outlet, Ivan San Antonio, reports that the two La Liga clubs have "reached a deal" for €50m plus €10m in variables.
Furthermore, Kounde 'rejected' Chelsea's offer after agreeing terms with Barca.
Gerard Romero has also claimed that the French international's transfer to the Nou Camp could become official "at any time".
While Chelsea have been keen on signing Kounde for over a year, they have alternatives in sight.
They have registered interest in Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig and Presnel Kimpembe from Paris Saint-Germain.
According to Guardian correspondent Jacob Steinberg, "nothing is written" between Chelsea and Sevilla.
Steinberg reiterates that Koundé wasn't a top priority for Thomas Tuchel at the start of the window, so it wouldn't be surprising if the Blues pulled out of the deal.
