Lagos Government Ensures Speedy Completion of Lekki-Epe Highway

After reaching the 95% completion stage of the rehabilitation and upgrading of the six-lane Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe highway in the first phase, the Lagos State Government has assured the rapid delivery of the second phase of the project from Eleko Junction at the Abraham Adesanya roundabout.

According to the Special Adviser for Works and Infrastructure, Ms. Aramide Adeyoye, the road project is part of the state government's efforts to clear traffic congestion and improve human and vehicular movement on the corridor.

Speaking during the project visit, Adeyoye called on residents, commuters and other stakeholders to support the project contractors to enable them to successfully construct the road infrastructure.

As part of efforts to reduce travel time and ensure timely delivery of the second phase of the project, the special adviser urged motorists along the axis to exercise patience and respect the road signs along the construction corridor.

Adeyoye noted that a change in attitude on the part of motorists and commuters would go a long way to bringing common sense back to the road as construction work intensifies on the 16 kilometer stretch between Eleko and Abraham Adesanya Junction.

The special adviser, who said the state government is not ignoring the pains of commuters and residents, added that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration is set to replicate the feat achieved during of the first phase of 18 kilometers, delivering one kilometer per month.

She promised to give residents and stakeholders the best value in terms of traffic management plans for the project, while cautioning contractors on the methodology to adopt since the second phase is in the area built,.

According to her, the delivery must be different from that adopted for the delivery of the first phase.

She indicated that Awoyaya, which is one of the areas generating a lot of gridlocd, should be addressed first.

"As soon as this is done, the contractor will work at both ends (Awoyaya as well as from Eleko Junction)," she said.

Lekki Estates Residents Association Infrastructure Chairman, MrSuleman Bello, pledged the support of residents to ensure timely delivery of the project.

He said the association has embarked on regular outreach to inform residents and other stakeholders to calm down when in the construction corridor.

According to him, if motorists maintained a dedicated lane around the corridor, the road project would proceed seamlessly with minimal inconvenience.

He said that as stakeholders, residents have a responsibility to protect those working on the project as well as the project itself.

A representative of the construction company, Zakhia El Bashanuny, said that preliminary work has started on the second phase.

He promised that the project, despite the special characteristics of a rigid pavement, will be delivered on time.

He noted that the contractors were able to achieve rapid delivery of the first phase of the project even before the project deadline expired.

While reiterating the commitment to deliver the project even faster than the first phase, he called for cooperation from stakeholders and the motoring public.
