Lagos government identifies 349 buildings in distress and issues 90-day ultimatum

The Lagos State government has issued a 90-day ultimatum to owners of 349 distressed buildings in the state to revamp or tear down the buildings.

The government issued a “final notice” on Friday through its Ministry of Land and Urban Development and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

The statement signed by LASBCA Chief Executive Officer Gbolahan Oki was titled "Final Notice to Conduct Integrity Test and Implement Test Recommendations".

“This is to inform the general public that the under-listed structures have been identified by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) as exhibiting various signs of distress,” the statement read.< /p>

“LASBCA therefore served all law enforcement notices on the structures and requested the owners/developers of the structures to perform non-destructive testing (NDT) on the structures with no response from the respective owners/developers of the buildings.

The government has advised owners and developers of affected buildings to carry out non-destructive testing on the structures to check their structural stability and where the structures are found to be unsuitable for habitation, a demolition permit must be obtained with its planning permission authority to remove the structures in the interest of public safety.

“Where the structure is recommended for re-engineering/renovation, buildings must perform non-destructive testing on the structures to verify their structural stability and when the structures are found to be unsuitable for habitation, a demolition permit must be issued. obtained from the Lagos State Physical Development Permit Authority (LASPPPA) to tear down the structure in the interest of public safety,” the statement read.

"A period of 90 days is granted after the publication of this notice for the conduct of NDT, the re-engineering or the removal of structures identified which show signs of distress (as the case may be) failing which LASBCA will not will not hesitate to remove structures in the interest of public safety and in accordance with the regulations of the law Where structures are removed by the Agency, the cost of removal shall be recovered from the owner/developer, as the requires the law.
