Lewis Hamilton shares his feelings on the prospect of a historic winning streak ending this season

Lewis Hamilton has played down the impact of his unrivaled winning streak that ends in 2022. The Mercedes star is yet to make it to the top step of the podium this year, putting his status as the only driver in the F1 history of winning a Grand Prix in every season of his risky career.

It was clear from Mercedes' pre-season testing that their period of F1 dominance was about to come to an end. The Silver Arrows had enjoyed an unprecedented run that saw them win eight consecutive constructors' championships from 2014 to 2021.

But Red Bull have been clearly ahead this season, leaving Hamilton and George Russell unable to catch up. Ferrari also enjoyed a faster pace than Mercedes, but a string of errors from their side means the race for second place in the team standings is still on.

"I don't see this as a dry spell", . "I think this year has been a year of growth. It has been a good experience for everyone.

DON'T MISS:

"There are six races [remaining] so there are six opportunities and we will try to win, but if we don't I don't think it's the end of the world. [It's been] the one of the hardest seasons of my career. We just need to understand the car. Our target is a second place. Hopefully in the next six races we will do well."

Hamilton is clear he has just six races to salvage his Grand Prix winning streak in every season since securing his F1 seat aged 22. The Briton came close to winning the world title in his first year before going one better and securing his first crown 12 months later.

Even when things were tough at McLaren between 2009 and 2013, Hamilton still found a way to win at least one race each campaign. His dominance went up several notches when he joined Mercedes in 2014 and hitting double figures in terms of wins per season has become a regular occurrence.

Last year Hamilton won eight races but sadly missed out on a record eighth world title against Max Verstappen in a spectacular Abu Dhabi finale. Over the past few months, the Mercedes veteran has had to sit and watch as Verstappen dominates the field and the Dutchman could clinch back-to-back championships in Singapore next time around.

"[The situation] is similar to Lewis [Hamilton] in previous years," said McLaren star Lando Norris. "When you have a car that can deliver and win races, [Verstappen] is the one who seizes those opportunities. When he beats his teammate every time, it's impressive to see day after day.

"Even in FP1 on his first lap of the day, his lap times are normally faster than what we ever do in qualifying. Look, he's one of the most talented drivers ever. time. He will undoubtedly win a second [title] this year and will most likely win more in the future."
