“After a relatively calm summer, the Los Angeles County Public Health Department (Public Health) reports an increase in Covid-19 transmission measures for the fifth consecutive week,” the department announced today.

“The increased circulation of Covid-19 is likely the combined result of several factors, including summer travel, back to school and the emergence of new variant strains of Covid-19,” the official statement read.

But officials warned: “Compared to other times during the pandemic, hospitalizations and deaths remain relatively low. .”

The average of 512 daily cases this week represents an increase of nearly 35% from the week last. Reported cases do not include home testing, so it is almost certain that the true number of Covid infections is much higher.

Anecdotally, it seems like a lot of people are getting sick. Deadline reported on a recent outbreak at Lionsgate that caused the studio to require masks on two floors of its Santa Monica office.
