A guitar used by John Lennon became the most expensive Beatles instrument ever sold at auction.

The Framus Hootenanny 12-string acoustic guitar was found in an attic after being presumed lost for more than 50 years, the auctioneers said.

It sold for $2.9 million (£2.3 million) via a telephone auction at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York.

Lennon played the song You've Got To Hide Your Love Away on guitar in the 1965 film Help!

It was also used on recordings of the album of the same name.

The guitar was sold by rock'n'roll memorabilia auction house Julien's Auctions, which broke world records with the sale of Beatles memorabilia.

Previous sales include another Lennon acoustic guitar, which sold for $2.4 million (£1.9 million) and Ringo Starr's Ludwig Drums, which sold for $2.2 million (£1.7 million).

David Goodman, managing director of Julien's Auctions, said the Framus was the most important Beatles guitar ever to come to market.

He said: "This guitar is not only a piece of musical history but also a symbol of John Lennon's enduring legacy.

"Today's model this unprecedented sale is a testament to the timeless appeal and respect for the music of the Beatles and John Lennon. "
