Victory LP: Address Lagosians, ensure their safety, Afenifere charges Sanwo-Olu

The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has amid tensions in Lagos State following the victory of Labor Party (LP) presidential candidate Mr Peter Obi on his counterpart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), called on the Governor of the State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to address the residents and assure them of the protection of their lives and property.

Afenifere made the call on Monday in a statement issued by Chief Supo Shonibare, who leads the group's Lagos chapter, while welcoming the APC Presidential Council's statement urging Lagosians not to resort to acts of violence.

Furthermore, the Pan-Yoruba Socio-Political Group has also urged the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Idowu Owohunwa to uphold the rule of law and ensure the protection of all residents and visitors in Lagos.

"We welcome the statement by the APC Presidential Council urging the people of Lagos not to resort to acts of violence. We also call on the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to to reach out to the residents of Lagos State and join Afenifere in assuring all residents of the protection of their lives and property.

“Further, we call on the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to uphold the rule of law and ensure the protection of all residents and visitors to Lagos,” the group said.

The group, while making the call, noted that Obi emerged victorious at the polls in Lagos despite vote suppression and violence clearly intended to deter perceived potential supporters of the rainbow coalition that had adopted the LP presidential candidate "as a joint candidate, to be able to vote".

According to Afenifere, many of this group of supporters were prevented from voting, saying there was a lack of diligence on the part of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who she said were from connivance with the leaders of the ruling party. in many local governments by refusing to upload election results to polling stations, claiming that the same BVAS device that had successfully accredited voters suddenly became unusable for uploading results.

The group, while saying it had been inundated with reports of violence in parts of Lagos targeting the Igbos, however, strongly stated that the Yoruba were a courteous and accommodating ethnic group who would always avoid violence in the expression of democratic preferences.

He expressed his gratitude to all Lagosians and locals who gathered en masse to perform their civic duty by voting, urging "locals to ignore the provocative messages on social media, many of which are activated by agents provocateurs , and aimed at fanning the embers of disunity among peace-loving locals and intended to pit the Yorubas against the Igbos."

"The Igbos voted for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the South Eastern States, in the same way that many Yoruba elected to vote for Mr. Peter Obi in Lagos and other South Western States", concluded Afenifere.
