Man killed by gunmen in Anambra, two days before his wedding

A man identified as Igwechukwu Charles Igweka, from Ukpor in Nnewi South Local Government Area, was reportedly killed by unidentified gunmen.

The man was reportedly killed just two days before his wedding ceremony, which was to take place on Saturday, January 7.

The young man, who is said to have returned to Anambra from his base to celebrate Christmas and the New Year, had attended his friend's wedding, and had also made videos with wads of naira notes in his hands, which he wanted to spray on his friend.

A source said, "After his friend's wedding ceremony on Thursday, at around 8 p.m., he drove out of his house and was chased by gunmen.

"They shot him in the hand while he was driving, but he managed to escape with the injury, but later fell into a ditch.

"It was as he was struggling to get out that the gunmen caught up to him and asked him if he was done running? They shot him at close range and he died."

The source said the man was buried on Friday because his family members did not want to keep his corpse too long.

The man was supposed to perform his wedding ceremony on Saturday at the compound of his wife's parents in Otolo, Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area.

Videos of the man being forced into a coffin at his funeral have been circulating on social media, along with another where he announced he was at his friend's wedding ceremony.

Spokesman for Anambra State Police Command, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, did not confirm the incident.
