Man reportedly shot dead by Iranian security forces for celebrating World Cup defeat

A 27-year-old Iranian man was reportedly killed by state security forces on Tuesday night after being shot in the head for sounding the horn in celebration of Iran's World Cup defeat.

According to several reports, including from the Iranian human rights NGO, Mehran Samak was killed by government agents after joining dozens of other protesters in the streets of Bandar-e Anzali, a town from northern Iran, to protest the abysmal human rights record.

Samak was sitting in a car next to his fiancée when a security guard approached and shot him, according to Iran International.

After being shot, Samrak was reportedly rushed to a local hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The protests quickly widened to include the general rights of the country's citizens. More than 400 people have been killed for participating in the protests, according to a human rights organization.

Mehran Samak was reportedly buried on Wednesday morning. BBC Persia has released a video which the outlet says is from the funeral service. Mourners were heard shouting: "You are the filth, you are the immoral, I am a free woman", a phrase which the BBC says was used frequently during the Troubles.
