Man who raped 9-year-old girl sentenced to life

An Ado-Ekiti High Court has sentenced a certain Daudu Jimoh, 62, to life imprisonment for raping a nine-year-old girl in Ilupeju Ekiti.

Mr. Jimoh was brought before Lekan Ogunmoye on August 5, 2020, on one count of rape.

According to the prosecution, the accused had, on September 27, 2019, in Ilupeju Ekiti, raped a nine-year-old girl, in violation of article 31 (2) of the law on the rights of the child, Cap. C7, Ekiti State Laws, 2012.

In her court statement, the survivor said, "I attended a kindergarten/primary school in Ilupeju Ekiti, Baba Cooler (the convict) was our landlord, he had sex with me four times before let my sister surprise us that day.

"In the afternoon he called me to his room, he asked me to sleep on the chair, he took off my pants and put his penis in my vagina, he did it when my sister caught us.

“Whenever he had sex with me, I was always scared to tell my mom because he warned me not to tell anyone or I would die,” victim said .

To prove his case, the prosecutor, Julius Ajibare, called four witnesses and presented the defendant's statements, as well as a medical report as exhibits.

However, Mr. Jimoh, who spoke through his lawyer, Chris Omokhafe, confessed to the crime, but denied penetrating her vagina.

In his judgment, Mr Ogunmoye said the defendant's written and oral confessions showed unequivocally that he had in fact committed the offence.

"Overall, the prosecution has proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt against the accused as charged.

"The only issue for determination is resolved in favor of the prosecution. He is found guilty as charged.

“He is sentenced to life imprisonment,” Mr. Ogunmoye said.
