ASR Africa Launches Technology-Based Mentoring Program for Girls in Tertiary Institutions in Northern Nigeria

The Abdul Samad Rabiu Initiative for Africa (ASR Africa) today unveiled an essential mentorship program tailored for young female students at the Federal College of Education, Technical (FCET), Gusau, Zamfara State . This initiative, which was born and inspired by the principles highlighted during the UN Women Convention on the Status of Women (CSW) of 2022 in New York, USA, is centered on “the innovation, technological change and education in the digital age to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”.

Dr. Ubon Udoh, Managing Director/CEO of ASR Africa, said, “Our commitment to education at ASR Africa goes beyond providing infrastructure and financial support, but also involves significant technical assistance. Our collaboration with FCET Gusau management and staff is one such partnership. I urge the young girls in the college to take full advantage of this opportunity and take advantage of it to become valuable contributors to their communities. "With the launch of this programme, ASR Africa is proud to be at the forefront of advancing UN Women's mission in striving to bridge the digital divide for Nigerian women and girls" , he added.

In his response, Prof. Umar Bello, Provost of FCET Gusau, expressed deep appreciation to ASR Africa President, Abdul Samad Rabiu, for going beyond his initial request for infrastructural assistance to include technical assistance that has immense benefits for the school. He also thanked the partners who collaborate with ASR Africa in this endeavour.

This ASR Africa mentorship program aims to overcome several barriers faced by young women in STEM fields, such as the scarcity of female role models, limited opportunities for mentorship and sponsorship, and deep-rooted cultural and societal biases . The program is expected to increase the number of female students opting for careers in STEM fields, improving their academic performance and preparing them for future career prospects.

The launch attracted the attention and participation of many women's organizations from the United Nations and across the African continent, some of which engaged the students through insightful presentations and a thought-provoking Q&A session.

ASR Africa, established in 2021 by African industrialist, philanthropist and BUA Group Chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, is dedicated to providing sustainable and impact-based indigenous solutions to pressing development challenges in the areas of health, education and social development across Africa, through its annual $100 million African Fund for Sustainable Development and Renewal.
