Chaos in Ondo community as violent clash leaves two dead
A local government councilor and a vigilante were killed by gunmen at Koseru, a farm in the Odigbo local government area of Ondo State.
The incident, which happened on Saturday, is suspected to be a retaliatory attack following an earlier attack on a woman.
The advisor's name has not yet been verified, but the vigilante has simply been identified as Kayode.
Sources said Saturday's attack followed the alleged murder of a woman in Kajola village, Okitipupa local government area. The two communities have had land disagreements in the past, an official said.
Police, however, said that although the woman was shot, she survived the attack.
On Sunday, the gunmen who attacked Koseru also reportedly destroyed farmland and burned motorbikes during the raid.
Many residents have since fled the community for fear of attack.
Amotekun's state corps commander, Adetunji Adeleye, confirmed the incident, saying the corpses were deposited in a morgue.
However, Mr Adeleye, who said no Amotekun operatives died in the attack, said normalcy had been restored to the community.
He also said that a combined team of police, army and Amotekun Corps were keeping the peace in the area.
“There has been a centuries-old crisis in Koseru between the Oluku family of Ikale in Okitipupa and the Oyo/Osun farmers living in Odigbo local government,” Mr Adeleye said.
"The Oyo/Osun are mainly cash crop farmers. They fought for ownership of the land.
"The new crisis erupted when a woman from Kajola was shot dead.
"We suspect a retaliatory attack by some Ikale youths who mobilized and launched an attack on the unsuspecting Osun/Oyo farmers.
"There is an advisor representing the Oyo/Osun axis who was killed in the fight. A vigilante member and not Amotekun was killed.
“Their corpses have been deposited in the hospital. Amotekun, the police and the army maintain vigilance during the night to ensure the return of peace. The attackers have destroyed more agricultural land.”
State police spokesman Funmilayo Odunlami, while confirming the incident, said no police officers were killed in the attack.
She said a woman was shot on her farm on Saturday afternoon by two masked men who tried to kill her.
She said security guards were deployed in the community to restore peace, adding that State Police Commissioner Oyeyemi Oyediran visited the community and ordered the arrest of those involved in arson and murder in the community.< /p>
