Meet Javier Olivan, Sheryl Sandberg's Successor at Meta

In June, Sheryl Sandberg stepped down as COO of Meta Platform Inc META, after which Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg named longtime partner Javier Olivan as his successor of Sanberg.

Olivan joined Facebook more than 15 years ago, before joining the social media giant, he was at Siemens AG SIEGY as an R&D engineer.

As head of international growth, Olivan helped expand Facebook's footprint overseas in countries like Russia, India, Germany and France . He also participated in the redesign of Facebook's messaging application. Additionally, he was the key person behind the acquisition of WhatsApp for $22 billion.

Since 2018, he has served as Chief Growth Officer and Vice President of Cross-Meta Products and Infrastructure.

Olivan is among Zuckerberg's most trusted advisors and has key responsibilities across the company. For example, during the 2016 election, Zuckerberg asked Olivan to deal with issues related to election ads, spam, and fake messages.

Sheryl Sandberg resigned from Facebook in June after spending nearly 14 years with the company.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Sandberg called his time at Meta "an honor and privilege of a lifetime", but joked that it wasn't either" the most manageable job anyone has ever had".

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, shared a farewell message on Facebook, calling Sandberg's planned departure "the end of an era".
