Messi and Argentina are the best. FIFA awards say so too

February 28 - Lionel Messi was named FIFA Player of the Year again on Monday as Argentina claimed all the major men's awards after winning a memorable World Cup final last December.

Messi edged out Kylian Mbappé while the award for best female player went to Spaniard Alexia Putellas for the second consecutive year.

After guiding Argentina to World Cup glory in an epic final against Mbappé's France last year in Qatar, Messi won the vote against Mbappé and Karim Benzema by winning the prize of FIFA for the seventh time in 14 years.

"It's been a crazy year for me," Messi said. "I could fulfill my dream (of the World Cup) after fighting for so long. And in the end it happened, and it was the best thing of my career. players, but very few can do it, so I'm grateful to God that I was able to do it."

Putellas was again in the top three despite being injured a few days before the Euros and missing the tournament. She scored 34 goals in all competitions last season.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was voted FIFA Men's Coach of the Year after leading his side to the World Cup title in December, while the Women's Coach award went to Sarina Wiegman, who led England to their first-ever Euro triumph.< /p>

Polish amputee Marcin Oleksy won the Puskas award for best goal of the year for a spectacular acrobatic volley with Warta Poznan against Stal Rzeszow.

The event in Paris was marked by tributes to Pelé, who died late last year aged 82 following a battle with colon cancer. Pele's wife, Marcia Aoki, received a trophy honoring the great man from former Brazilian striker Ronaldo.
