Months before term expires, FG to build new medical center in Buhari's hometown

President Muhammadu Buhari's administration has budgeted N500 million for the establishment of a new Federal Medical Center in Daura, Katsina State, Mr Buhari's home town.

This is included in the N20.5 trillion budget proposal for 2023 presented to the National Assembly by the President in early October.

When completed, the hospital will classify Katsina as the only state in Nigeria with two federal medical centers.

The Federal Medical Center, Katsina, is one of 22 existing Federal Medical Centers spread across the states of the federation and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of the country.

The distance between Daura and Katsina would be 83.6 kilometers, or about an hour and seven minutes drive.

While Katsina is supposed to have two FMCs, 15 other states in the federation currently lack such a medical center.

But the government has remained silent on the issue, describing it as a political decision.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, based on the six geopolitical zones, four states of Ogun, Lagos, Ekiti and Ondo in the South West Region each have a Federal Medical Center, while only Delta and Bayelsa in the South - the southern region has one each.

Like the South-South region, only two states of Imo and Abia in the South East have the presence of FMC while in the North East, five states of Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Yobe and Adamawa, have a center each.

In the north-central region of the country, Niger, Kogi, Benue, and FCT have one each, and in the northwest, four states of Kebbi, Jigawa, Zamfara, and Katsina also have one center each. But that may soon change if the President's new proposal is accepted and another FMC is completed in Mr. Buhari's hometown of Daura in Katsina State.

States without FMC include Oyo and Osun in the southwest; Akwa-Ibom, Rivers, Edo and Cross River in the south-south; Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu in the southeast; Kano, Kaduna and Sokoto in the northwest; Plateau and Kwara in the centre-north, and Borno in the northeast.

Plan for FMC Daura in high gear

PREMIUM TIMES findings revealed that the administration headed by Governor Aminu Masari in the state has declared support for the establishment of the new Federal Medical Center.

The governor has approved that an existing general hospital in the President's city be upgraded by the federal government to the new FMC. And in addition, the governor announced a donation of 50 hectares of land for the project.

The government has since directed the Katsina State Ministry of Health to liaise with the Ministry of Lands and Surveys to begin land demarcation in Daura as well as the process of issuing the certificate of Occupation (CofO) at the Federal Ministry of Health.

More than FMC

Since Mr. Buhari took office as President of Nigeria in 2015, his hometown of Daura has been seen by many Nigerians as a “construction site” following the unprecedented and growing number of investment projects located in the city.

In August 2019, the Nigerian government inaugurated the Nigerian Air Force Referral Hospital in the city.

According to Daily Trust, the hospital has facilities for radiodiagnosis, cancer screening, dialysis, laboratory diagnosis and research and the president is quoted as saying that the hospital "minimizes the need for people to travel to other states and even...
