NAFDAC seizes Tramadol worth over N1.1 trillion naira

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) revealed that it had seized tramadol worth over $1.1 trillion from Nigeria using intelligence collected for the agency.

He also announced that around 1.3 million naira worth of falsified, prohibited and counterfeit goods were seized during his recent raid.

NAFDAC Chief Executive Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye said this on Tuesday as she fielded questions from reporters in Abuja and also revealed that prior to her administration, NAFDAC was not in ports during seven years -2011 to 2018, May 16.

She said, "Our mandate includes import and export control, but we have been kicked out of ports for seven years and Nigeria has become a haven for all that is bad: food, medicine and other regulated products.

"I didn't know before I came that this had happened, so I knew NAFDAC had their work cut out for them. We've done a lot since I took over. By the time I arrived, we were swimming in Tramadol as a country.

"At that time there were some issues with NDLEA and they also called us to action. So my first six months I was chasing Tramadol.

"We have seized over N1.7 trillion containers of Tramadol since then.

"We were called by an informant in high places that we were to expect 31 containers of tramadol labeled as building materials. This was just one of the containers containing building materials.

“These containers are worth around 1.7 trillion naira. The NDLEA has stepped up its game and I commend Brigadier General Buba Marwa.”

Adeyeye therefore said that more staff were needed to carry out its enforcement and monitoring activities

“We have strengthened our enforcement. In the last raid, we received 1.3 million naira worth of falsified, banned, counterfeit medicines.”

"We travel every time, almost every week to raid one or the other through the public because we cannot be on every street in Nigeria. It is the citizens who will help. However, this what we realize is that we need more staff to move en masse."
