The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has cracked down on the manufacturers of a herbal intoxicant, popularly known as "Kurkura", as well as of herbal aphrodisiacs and alcoholic bitters in the country.

This follows reports of the widespread use of Kurkura, particularly in the southwest and north of the country.

NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, who made it known during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, said the findings revealed a dangerous trend in the world. use of these substances associated with a high concentration of tobacco and cannabis.

According to her, Kurkura herbal preparations discovered in circulation include Five Minutes Power Herbs Medicine, Haonu Laha Herbal Mixture, Gamzaki Tradomedical Herbal Mixture, Barakallahu Multipurpose Herbal Mixture and Sabon Karfi Herbal Mixture.

She said that even though the Haonu Laha herbal blend was registered with the agency, it contained unapproved substances that were harmful to the body.

Adeyeye said: "Kurkura is an illicit product that is illegally consumed for the sole purpose of getting drunk. The substance, if abused, can be harmful to organs of the body such as the brain, kidneys and liver. Damage to the kidneys and liver cannot be overstated. This substance can cause irrational thoughts and altered state of mind which, if taken by a driver, may result in a traffic accident with the resulting fatal consequences or can lead to criminal behavior such as rape, kidnapping and murder.

"Another herbal preparation of concern is an aphrodisiac and we have found it to be associated with cannabis.

"In our recent operation, we confiscated the following dangerous herbal aphrodisiac from some Islamic herbal medicine shops in Zaria, Kaduna State: Gagare Man Power, Minister of Man Power, Almenjou for Lazy Men in Bed, Nisan Zango Karfin Maza, Shagalin Ka Man Power, Dakan Jia Man Power Enhancement, Wuff Male Sexual Performance, Afafata for Sexual Drive, etc.

“So far, one of the illegal factories involved in the production of these unauthorized products has been shut down and the owner arrested. Of note is the discovery of the use of Hyergra 200 (sildenafil citrate tablet), amafranil tablets (clomipramine 25mg tablet) and Cannon Extra (paracetamol 500mg + caffeine 30mg) in the ward. production. The owner admitted that he dissolves Hyergra 200, Cannon Extra and Amafranil in a drum and mixes the contents with boiled Kanafari, garlic, Dundu, Marke, Hankufa, sweetener and sodium benzoate to make up the Man Power preparation.
