National Dialogue on Health: Policymakers and Experts to Discuss Primary Health Care Financing (LIVE UPDATE)

Welcome to the 2022 edition of the annual National Health Dialogue, a high-level platform organized by the Center for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) in collaboration with PREMIUM TIMES to advance conversations on the major health issues in Nigeria and Africa by extension.

The 2022 edition which has the theme: "Financing of primary health care; role of state and non-state actors” takes place today (Tuesday) in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.

The event is expected to bring together policymakers and experts to discuss and share experiences on key issues in the primary health care sub-sector, such as financing and human resources for health and insurance .

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Minister of Health Osagie Ehanire, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) Executive Secretary Faisal Shuaib are among other key figures expected to attend the 'event.

Other participants include, but are not limited to, health practitioners and advocates, political, religious and traditional leaders.

The media will also play a key role during the event which aims to address the challenges facing health services in the country.

09:55: It's a beautiful morning here at the BON ELVIS Hotel, Abuja. We are live at the 2022 edition of the National Dialogue on Health. Although the event was scheduled to start at 9:00am, it will start late as registration is still ongoing.

10:05: Everything is ready for the start of the event. The moderator for today's high profile event is Moji Makanjuola, a renowned broadcaster who will be assisted by Tope Mustapha, a journalist with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

10:06 a.m.: Ms. Mustapha takes the podium and the event begins with the national anthem. She welcomed everyone to today's important event which focuses on financing primary health care in Nigeria.

10:07 am: The moderator invites CJID Executive Director, Tobi Oluwatola, to deliver his welcoming remarks.

10:08 am: Mr Oluwatola said today's event comes at a time when the country's health system is facing a mirage of challenges.

10:09 am: He said Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, still has high maternal mortality rates, high death toll from malaria, cholera and other easily preventable diseases.

10:10 a.m.: He said the Nigerian government continues to pay insufficient attention to the health sector. He said the budget allocated to the health sector is never enough to meet the health needs of Nigerians.

10:12 a.m.: Mr. Oluwatola said that until the government starts prioritizing the health sector, the system will continue to be in bad shape. He said there is a need to look at the value that drives us to get quality health care.

10:14 a.m.: He said the dialogue is a great opportunity to make big decisions that will change the face of healthcare in Nigeria. “Decisions made here today will go a long way in shaping the future of the Nigerian health system,” he said.

10.16am: Speaking on behalf of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), he said majority of Nigerians still pay out of pocket for healthcare. He noted that until the gaps in health insurance are closed, the country still has a long way to go.

10:17: He explained that gaps in primary health care prompted CJID to organize this dialogue and lead the conversation. "We need more dialogues like this to find an ingenious solution to the health problems in the country," he said.
