NDDC Board: Minister Inaugurates Onochie, 14 Others, Charges Them for Implementing Forensic Report

Niger Delta Affairs Minister Umana Okon Umana on Wednesday inaugurated President Muhammadu Buhari's Special Assistant on New Media, Ms. Lauretta Onochie, as Chairperson of the Board of the Development Commission of the Niger Delta (NDDC) along with 14 other members of the Council.

At the inauguration of the NDDC Board Members in Abuja, the Minister reminded them that the task ahead of them is to faithfully implement the recommendations of the forensic audit report.< /p>

He instructed them to strictly comply with the relevant provisions of the rules in force in the Service, in particular compliance with the procurement thresholds as enshrined in the nation's public procurement law, and to respect the financial rules of operation to ensure prudence in management. limited resources.

The Minister also urged the new management to avoid incitement to award new contracts that are misleading and indiscriminate. He said the new leadership should instead focus on completing ongoing projects to better serve the people of the region and fulfill the mandate of the NDCC, thus helping to repair the negative public perception of the Commission.

"The tasks of the new board will include faithful implementation of the recommendations of the forensic audit report. In addition to the findings of the forensic audit, the government has received numerous petitions alleging irregularities in employment with the Commission.

“The new Management Board will have to look into these allegations of irregular employment from 2019 and follow up on the ongoing staff audit at the Commission to ensure that all cases of employment during of the period in question complied with the rules in force and regulations of the Service.

For our part, as the line ministry, we will not hesitate to provide and make available to the Council and the Commission as a whole the support and advice necessary for a successful mandate.

"Every contract above the management threshold must be submitted to the Ministerial Tenders Board and the Federal Executive Council. Any violation of contract approval limits will result in severe penalties.

“I also urge you to avoid the impetus for awarding new contracts that are spurious and indiscriminate, and suggest that you instead focus on completing ongoing projects to better serve the people of the region and fulfill the mandate of the NDCC, helping to redress the negative public perception of the Commission.

Speaking to reporters after his inauguration, Onochie said things would be done differently at the NDDC to achieve better results that would transform the lives of young people and the entire population of the Niger Delta region.

“We have a model, the Minister has spoken extensively about how we are going to reposition the NDDC. We are not going to do things the way we did before, because if we continue to do things the way we before that, we will get the same result that made the NDDC a Troubled Commission.

"We are going to have changes, serious changes; we are going to do totally different things so that the people of the Niger Delta can benefit from what the Nigerian people have invested in the Niger Delta.

"In the past it was that the money invested in the Niger Delta went to Abuja, Lagos, London, Dubai and elsewhere, this is no longer what we want, our young people everywhere are asking for be personal assistants where they themselves can be employers of labour.

"We're going to reposition our region, empower our young people so they can be proud of who they are, so they can be proud of where they come from," she said.
