NDLEA seizes 5.8 tons of cannabis and arrests dealers

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has seized 5.8 tonnes of cannabis from dealers in five states, agency spokesman Femi Babafemi said in Abuja on Sunday.

Babafemi said that among those arrested was a cripple, Ibrahim Yusuf, 45, in possession of 4 kg of mind-altering substance.

He said the crippled drug trafficker was arrested on November 21 at Gasline, Ifo, Ogun State.

The spokesperson also said that a total of 36 bags weighing 570 kg of the same substance were recovered during a raid in a forest in Ogunmakin, Obafemi Owode local government area of ​​the 'State.

According to him, NDLEA officers evacuated 141 bags of Cannabis Sativa with a gross weight of 1,884 kg from a warehouse in Okpe Forest, Akoko Edo LGA in Edo on November 22.

"On Thursday November 24, NDLEA officers arrested Ismaila Abubakar, 50, at Okada Junction, Ovia South West LGA with 22 bags of cannabis sativa weighing 216.5 kg.

“The following day, officers also seized 112 bags of cannabis sativa stored in Obi Camp Forest, Ovia South West LGA weighing 1,512 kg.

“This was also followed by another seizure of 45 bags weighing 529.5kg, while officers also intercepted a Toyota Sienna bus with Reg. No. BDG 598 FZ (Lagos) loaded with 566.5 kg of cannabis.

“The bus was traveling to Onitsha, Anambra, and a suspect, Sunday Mathias, 30, was arrested with the seizure,” he said.

Babafemi said NDLEA agents also stormed Oke-Ogun forest on November 25, where a man named Onyebuchi Chime was arrested with 88 kg of cannabis, a gun and ammunition in Ondo State.

He added that NDLEA officers also recovered 149.5 kg of the substance from Ipele forest.

"No less than 12.42 hectares of cannabis plantations were destroyed and 195 kg of transformed herbs of the substance were recovered in Efon Alaye, Ekiti State.

“Two drug traffickers, Richard Ebong and Nze Abraham, were arrested on Saturday November 26 during the raid,” he said.

The NDLEA spokesperson said that Mrs. Rahmat Adebayo, 27, was arrested on November 24 in Sabo-Ilupeju, Atiba LGA of Oyo State with 136.3 kg of cannabis.

Babafemi said as many as 84,000 tramadol tablets were recovered on Thursday from a suspect, Muhsin Abdullahi, in Bodinga area, Sokoto state.

He added that 16,000 tablets of Exol-5 and D5 concealed in palm oil were seized on Friday from a 24-year-old Lawal Rabe in Kokami village, Danja LGA, Katsina State .

In addition, 54,500 tablets of Tramadol and Exol-5 were seized from Basiru Muhammadu and Saidu Yusuf in the same area on Saturday.
