Nembe killings: Bayelsa representative caucus calls on Tinubu to set up a commission of inquiry

The Bayelsa State caucus in the House of Representatives has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the crisis in the Nembe local government area of ​​the state.

The Caucus, in a press briefing at the National Assembly on Monday, said the latest killings and maimings of innocent citizens in Opu-Nembe, Nembe Local Government were politically motivated.

Marie Ebikake (PDP, Bayelsa), speaking on behalf of the caucus, said the president should appoint a commission of inquiry to investigate the alleged involvement of the Nigerian police.

She said, “We want to condemn in the strongest possible terms the killing and maiming of innocent citizens in Opu-Nembe, Nembe Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, acting on the request of individuals determined to destroy the existing peace.

“We want to take this opportunity to call on President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently form a high-level commission of inquiry into the immediate and distant causes, including the role of the Nigerian police, especially the SWAT department, its funding source and others who played a role in the armed invasion to ensure that the perpetrators are fished out and face the wrath of the law. »

She said some young people from Nembe are currently in detention in Abuja after being arrested by police following a raid in the community.

The lawmaker said the officers who carried out the raid disregarded the state governor, who is the chief of security.

She also urged the families of the victims to remain calm while the relevant authorities are allowed to investigate the incident.

“We also want to use this medium to call on the families of those killed in this unfortunate incident to remain calm and allow peace to reign in the kingdom. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and call on all sons and daughters of Nembe to remain calm,” she said.
