Netflix has signed with TV ratings agency Barb, which means its viewership will be measured by an external, independent body for the first time.

The move makes Barb the first industry-owned rating service in the world to which Netflix joined.

Previously, the streaming giant only released snapshots of its viewing data, highlighting the success of its most popular shows.

Barb will start reporting Netflix viewership figures from November.

This is a significant change for the streamer, and will see data used by advertisers, competitors and journalists to determine the success or failure of Netflix properties.

Netflix isn't the only streamer included - any service that represents more than 0.5% of total identified viewing will also be listed. This means that content from services such as Disney and Amazon is also likely to be included.

While BARB flags service-level streaming and of the program since November 2021, only its subscription organizations and those with a special license previously had access to Netflix data.
