Newcastle 1-0 Fulham: Mitrovic double kick penalty lets Magpies go as Isak scores late winner

It was the story of Alexander and Aleksandar as Isak scored a last-minute winner for Newcastle United against Fulham after Mitrovic scored an illegal goal from the penalty spot.

The striker's £60million third goal for the club secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at St James' Park, but only after former Tyneside favorite Mitrovic saw a successful penalty excluded for double contact.

Eddie Howe's men, who controversially included Joelinton in their starting line-up despite his midweek arrest for drunk driving, moved Manchester United back to third in the table after extending their invincibility in the league at 14 games.< /p>

Fulham, however, can feel underwhelmed after frustrating their hosts for long periods of time and repeatedly threatening on the counter.

Joe Willock looped in a third-minute attempt after cutting inside Joelinton's flick and Issa Diop entered a big block to stop Sean Longstaff after he ran over Bruno's clever reverse pass Guimaraes two minutes later.

Mitrovic was also muffled at the other end as the visitors responded, but full-back Kenny Tete might have done better with his follow-through from the edge of the box, which he flew over.

Fulham worked their way into the game with Andreas Pereira and Willian starting to make an impression behind Mitrovic, although Callum Wilson saw a 21st-minute effort deflected towards goal after Miguel Almiron played Sean Longstaff behind the fullback Layvin Kurzawa.

Wilson headed into the arms of goalkeeper Bernd Leno from Kieran Trippier's cross as Newcastle kicked into high gear, and the striker was unable to make any meaningful contact with Willock's cross after the midfielder's first touch brought him past Tete 12 minutes before half-time.

The link-up between Longstaff, Almiron and Trippier on the Magpies' right proved successful, but they went straight into the middle with six minutes left in the half, with Leno pulling off a good reaction past Wilson, who shot directly at the goalkeeper in stoppage time, had spun on the pass from Fabian Schar.

Guimaraes, who had been treated twice for an ankle problem in the first half before leaving the field in tears at half-time, was replaced by Allan Saint-Maximin but it was Wilson who missed a another chance when he missed the target with a firm header from Trippier's corner in the 51st minute.

Schar was unlucky to see a 61st-minute free kick return from the post before Almiron's shot from the rebound went to safety.

However, Marco Silva's men believed they had taken the lead after being awarded a penalty after a VAR review of Trippier's challenge on Bobby Decordova-Reid.

After a long delay, Mitrovic sent the kick past Nick Pope, but only with the help of a double touch and referee Robert Jones quickly ruled out the strike to give the home side a chance to escape.

Saint-Maximin exploded just wide from 20 yards out with 13 minutes remaining as the home side tried to capitalize on their reprieve, and they did just that with seconds of normal time remaining when substitute Isak headed home from close range after Wilson had sent the ball through the net.
