This was after his wife heard another BBC podcast, In Dark Corners, which explores abuse in UK private schools, that Campbell decided to contact the producer and reveal what he knew about the Edinburgh Academy.

Presenting his 5 Live show, Campbell told listeners he was about to discuss a tough topic, adding, "I know I'm among friends but I have maybe a wobble but I know you will be with me."

Explaining his experiences, he said: "I was beaten badly at the school by a teacher who was a figurehead in the scripture union - my mom went as far as she could and got a creeping apology from her but she was basically stuck and smothered near the school .

"It was a different time and it marked me all my life.

"And there was a teacher Hamish Dawson who is now dead and regularly had wandering hands - many of us were victims of this - and I and my friends still talk about it - with complete contempt. There were 12 of us.

"But there was something else I will never forget.
