Nigeria grants citizenship to 286 Americans, Europeans and others

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday granted Nigerian citizenship to 286 nationals in Abuja, urging them to be good citizens of the country to enjoy all the rights and privileges accorded to them.

“You have pledged your allegiance to Nigeria. When you give your love and loyalty to Nigeria, she returns her love and loyalty to you,” the president told the honorees during an event at State House.

The President explained that of the 286 foreign nationals presented with Nigerian citizenship certificates, 208 received certificates of naturalization, while 78 obtained certificates by registration.

He urged them to make positive and meaningful contributions to the advancement, progress and welfare of the various communities in which they reside, adding that as citizens they must be in tune with the National Ethics and Code of Conduct.

"You must abide by the ideals and institution of the Nigerian national flag, anthem, pledge and respect by all constituted authorities.

“All those concerned with immigration matters must offer our new citizens prompt legal identification. In addition, their local governments should assist in their integration into the local community to enable them to benefit from all the rights of a Nigerian citizen,” he said.

In the exercise of the constitutional powers vested in him by Sections 25 to 31 of Chapter III of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the President declared to the new Citizens that the Nigeria is a nation united by the principles of opportunity, equality and freedom as enshrined in the Constitution.

“No matter where you are from or what religion you practice, this country is now your country. Our history is now your history, and our traditions are now your traditions. Nigeria is your home, your pride and your joy.

"In line with our transformational ideals of strict adherence to due process and transparent procedures, the Ministry of Home Affairs has ensured that only deserving individuals are recommended to the Federal Executive Council for conferment of Nigerian citizenship ."

President Buhari recounted that the Federal Government in 2020 adopted the National Action Plan to Eradicate Statelessness and accordingly Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola inaugurated the High Level Steering Committee to eradicate statelessness in Nigeria by 2024.
