The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired), learned with immense sadness on Thursday of the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

He also offered his condolences to the Royal Family and Britain for the loss of the longest reigning monarch.

Buhari's message of condolence is contained in a statement signed Thursday evening by his Senior Special Assistant for Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, titled "President Buhari mourns the passing of the Queen of England".

Queen Elizabeth II of England died Thursday at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle, UK.

According to an official statement from the royal family, the queen passed away peacefully.

In his message of condolence, the President said: "My family and I, along with over 200 million Nigerians, learned with immense sadness of the passing of the Queen and the end of her unique and wonderful reign. 70. Her late Majesty was the only British sovereign known to 90% of our population.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the Royal Family, the people of the United Kingdom and the entire Commonwealth as we join the world in mourning his loss.

“The history of modern Nigeria will never be complete without a chapter on Queen Elizabeth II, a towering global personality and an exceptional leader. She dedicated her life to making her nation, the Commonwealth and the whole world a better place."

Buhari also welcomed the heir to the throne, King Charles III saying, "Your Majesty's ascension to the throne in accordance with tradition and prays that King Charles III's reign will be a testament to continued relations solid and fraternal relations between our two nations."< /p>
