NIMASA River Transport Will Further Improve Brown Water Regulation —NAMM

The Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Masters Seamen (NAMM), Captain Tajudeen Alao, has hailed the plans of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to launch a maritime transport policy waterway for its workers, stating that this effort will further improve regulation of inland waterways on Nigeria's brown waters.

Recall that NIMASA Director General Dr. Bashir Jamoh in a recent social media post said that a deliberate policy of NIMASA staff traveling to work by water will soon be in effect .

Speaking exclusively to the Nigerian Tribune on the effect of this on inland waterways, NAMM National Chairman Captain Tajudeen Alao said such efforts would lead to intelligence gathering on inland waterways of Nigeria for NIMASA.

According to the National Chairman of NAMM, who is also a board member of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), "It is a welcome development that NIMASA now wants to ensure that its workers commute to work via inland waterways.

“Apart from the fact that this will relieve workers from the stress they normally experience every day when commuting to work in different traffic situations on our roads, it will also serve as an intelligence gathering medium for NIMASA, which can then be transferred to the necessary quarters for appropriate action.

“There is no way NIMASA workers are on the waterways and see overloaded passenger boats, and not tell their office. NIMASA are on the waterways and see other passengers cruising the waterways without wearing life jackets, and do not report it to their office.

"Having NIMASA workers, who preach the blue economy mantra, be on the waterways from Monday to Friday will further deepen the regulation of the waterways, as everything they see will be flagged to their office, which in turn will pass such information to the necessary agency in charge of regulating the waterways. So this is a win-win situation for NIMASA and NIWA. This will help impose more discipline on our brown waters. . »
