The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) headquarters has reversed the decision of its Ogun State branch to withdraw the party's petition against the re-election of Governor Dapo Abiodun from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The petition calls for the March 18 election to be canceled due to the omission of the party name from the ballots.

PREMIUM TIMES reported the announcement of the withdrawal of the party's state chairman, Olaposi Oginni.

Mr. Oginni had said that pursuing the petition could be counterproductive, given that similar ballots were used to organize elections in Kano where the party won.

The party chairman also claimed that some anonymous people within the party at the national level wanted to hijack the petition.

His claim appears to have been confirmed on Sunday by a statement from the party's legal adviser made available to reporters.

The Legal Adviser, Robert Hon, gave the position of the national leadership of the party through a letter dated April 27 addressed to the Secretary of Ogun State Governorate and the Electoral Petitions Court of the State House of Assembly.

The letter titled "Notification of Unauthorized Withdrawal of Petition No.: EPT/OG/GOV/01/2023 pending in the Ogun State Electoral Court/Abeokuta State Legislative Assembly “, urged the court to disregard the withdrawal. notification by its state chapter.

"By the provisions of the Constitution of the New Nigeria People's Party, 2022, in particular Article 27.18 (iii), (v) and (vi); only the national legal adviser of the party may engage the services of outside counsel where desirable, subject to National Working Committee (NWC) approval.

"Section 27.18 (v) is reproduced below for your convenience: 'National Counsel shall: (iii) conduct litigation and legal defense on behalf of the party at all levels, including its organs, officials and assets (iv) Coordinate the activities of legal advisers at all levels on legal matters concerning the party, including, but not limited to, the conditions of engagement of external lawyers.

"(v) Be responsible for engaging outside retainers, if desirable, and counsel to manage all litigation involving the party at all levels, with the approval of the National Working Committee."
