NSSF advocates for the development of grassroots sport

Chairperson of the Nigerian School Sports Federation, Ms Olabisi Joseph, said sport development starts with development programs and basic training.

Joseph said it Thursday at the 23rd Central Conference Finals of the Milo Basketball Championship in Abuja.

"When you talk about sports development, it starts from the bottom. We have to find a way to get kids into sports. The benefits are huge.

“First of all, you build a healthy mind in a healthy body, training exposes them to life, but it also promotes good health and opens up many opportunities for them. This tournament has existed for 23 years and we have discovered many athletes thanks to this. Some of them play at the highest level, and some play in the Chinese tournament.

"When you engage children through sport, they don't think about vices, so sport reduces vices in children," said Joseph, who was represented by National Treasurer, NSSF, Obafunso Usman.

Also, Beverage Category Manager, Nestlé Nigeria, Olutayo Olatunj, said the championship started with less than 500 schools in 1999, but now brings together more than 10,000 schools each year.
