Ooni begins 7-day isolation, to pray for end of ASUU strike

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, began his annual seven-day seclusion on Sunday, a ritual that culminates in the celebration of the annual Olojo cultural festival in Osun State.

A statement signed by the monarch's spokesman, Moses Olafare, said the 2022 edition of the annual monarch's prayer will pay attention to the six-month strike launched by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) .

Mr. Olafare said the Ooni would also pray for a peaceful general election in 2023.

In 2021, as the monarch left for customary solitary confinement, he told reporters that he would pray that God would touch the hearts of Nigerian politicians and change them to love the people.

He further said that Nigerian politicians are the same regardless of party, enjoining them to start truly serving the people and stop taking the country for granted.

But on Sunday, the monarch focused his attention on young people, saying they are angry and rightly so.

“Just imagine the number of months they have been kept out of school, ASUU and the government must come together and end this because we cannot handle the anger of young people if they become uncontrollable.

"They have started blocking highways and even threatening to lock down airports, this is an indication that they have been pushed to the wall. So I call on our government to look in that direction and make the necessary changes ."

“It is preventable and the government and ASUU should end it for the benefit of young people.”
